Greetings everyone! |
|
As previously indicated, construction on the student union has started. The fencing is up around most of the construction site, the trailers for the contractor and project management team are in place, and equipment is arriving as this is written. Fortunately, the weather is cooperating for now, and once staging is complete at the end of next week, actual excavation and demolition will begin. |
|
The first part of the project requires closure of the East Walk from the SBS Bridge to the south edge of Building 14 (SOE), as well as the loading dock area of the student union (lower level, east side). This is to allow for the excavation of the loading dock for expansion and also for a tunnel to join the new space to the loading dock. Access between Small College and SBS is available to the east, along Parking Lot 2. Completion of this phase of the project is anticipated to take 6 months. |
| The walkway that crosses the North Lawn is also closed, as it is now part of the construction site. A new lighted walk path is being constructed at the northern perimeter of the construction site which will be available by the end of next week. |
| Signage and relocation maps are being posted around campus. Additionally, members of campus organizations, ASI officers, student union staff and students will be available around the student union perimeter next week to assist students in finding their way around the construction and to the relocated services. If your office would like a supply of the maps and information to hand out, please contact Cynthia Craig at x3559. We appreciate your assistance in spreading the word. |
| The Administrative Offices of the Loker Student Union have moved to Small College Bldg 2 (the former Police Station) along with Campus Dining. The Student Union staff will continue to provide services to the campus including our laptop checkout program, discount ticket sales to amusement parks and HDC Events, assistance with room reservations, as well as activities and programs through Toro Productions. Our phone numbers remain the same - 310-243-3559 for Student Union and 310-243-3814 for Campus Dining. The Office of Student Life is also moved to its temporary quarters in the Outreach Information Center - 310-243-2081. The last group to move from the Student Union will be Associated Students, who will move to their new location at the West End of the Health Center at the end of next week. For now, access to ASI is limited, but you can reach them by phone at 310-243-3686. We appreciate your patience while we settle into our new locations. |
| The mobile food locations in the Sculpture Garden, near Small College Bldg. 12, and south of the Cain Library are ready for trucks to roll in starting on Monday. Grab-n-Go Toros in Welch Hall is stocked and open, and Grab-n-Go in SBS will be open on February 1. The Bookstore is open in the Student Union for text sales for Spring 2005 and the Spirit Shop is also open in Small College Bldg. 1. Access to the Bookstore in the Student Union is only available from the South Walkway (between the Library and Student Union). |
