Greetings everyone!

The demolition of the loading dock has started and will include the removal of the east walkway. This area is now considered a hard hat area and access is strictly limited to construction and authorized personnel until further notice. Please use caution when walking in and around this area. Demolition of the interior of the student union will begin later this week.

I just wanted to update you again on things happening in and around the student union construction zone. Several folks have asked why things have been quiet for the last few days, and the answer is "mother nature"! The rains have caused the ground (north lawn) to be so saturated at this point, that the contractor is having trouble getting equipment on and off the site. The bad news is that more rain is expected, and the longer it rains, the longer it will take to dry things out and get moving again. But, while there has been little activity on the outside of the building, I can tell you that you wouldn't recognize the inside of the building at this point! The entire upper level (except the Bookstore) is one big open space - the walls and doors and offices are all gone, and there are even a couple of holes in the north exterior "skin" of the building. The lower level will soon look the same. If you are interested in seeing the progress, we will be posting pictures of the various stages of demolition and construction on our website in the next week or so.

One of the things that will be happening this week may be of interest to some - a large crane will be coming in tomorrow to the east walkway to relocate an air handler unit from the west side of the walkway to a new concrete pad on the east side (closer to SBS) of the walkway. This move requires the airhandler to be moved out from under the overhang of the existing building and then lifted up and over the east walkway. Anyone who is interested in observing is invited to do so from the SBS bridge (through the fencing looking north). The contractor has asked that the stairwell in SBS not be used for observation while the crane is actually lifting the unit up and over just as a safety precaution.

Other changes related to the project include the completion of the walkway at the North perimeter of the project, which opened today. When there is truck traffic in and out of the site, there will be a person stationed at the walkway to coordinate pedestrian and truck traffic. Your cooperation with their instructions will help keep everyone safe. And just a reminder, please be cautious anytime you are around the construction area.

Grab & Go Toros 2 opened this week in SBS (second level) and in addition to providing beverages, snacks and quick foods, it also houses the second ATM on campus - this is a new first for the campus! This is the first time we have had the luxury of 2 ATMs available on campus (much thanks to LA Schools Federal Credit Union)! Stop by and check out the new Grab & Go!

And, did I mention the weather is presenting challenges? The area around the sculpture garden tent has become so wet and messy that the trucks can no longer park there until concrete can be poured or the areas dries out completely. The tent is still available for seating, but the trucks are making their stop on the west side of the Theater for now.

If you have any connections in the weather department, we could do without this next rain storm! But then again, how else do you grow?

Watch us Grow...
